Blackboard upgrade

Blackboard course rollover 2016

Blackboard course (unit) rollover will take place on 1 August 2016. We recommend that staff do not edit 2015/16 courses after 5 pm on Friday 29 July, as changes made after this time may not be copied into the 2016/17 courses. All 2016/17 courses should be available to staff by 2 August.

Mediasite links will automatically be added to those 2016/17 courses which have Mediasite links in 2015/16 courses. The links will automatically update to the associated 2016/17 catalogue, where the Mediasite recordings are surfaced for students to view, once live.

Turnitin assignments will be copied into 2016/17 courses, but given new start, end, and post dates – so these will need to be changed before making the courses available to students. Note that Turnitin set an expiry date for all assignments in a course that is six months after the course creation date (ie 31 January 2017), after which all Turnitin assignments in the course will become read-only. This expiry date is automatically changed to the latest post date of any Turnitin assignment in the course – so it is worth adjusting the dates as early as possible.

A table showing details of how Blackboard course elements are copied during rollover can be found here.

If you have any questions, please contact tel-help@bristol.ac.uk.

Blackboard available again

Blackboard is available again, following the planned downtime earlier today.

Blackboard planned downtime: 7 June, 21 July and 4 August

On 21 July (8:00am to 3:00pm) IT Services will undertake essential maintenance work to the database that supports Blackboard. Blackboard will therefore be unavailable on that day – we apologise for any inconvenience caused. The work is being done to improve the stability of the service.

There will be a further half day of downtime on the morning of Thursday 4 August, for essential updates to Blackboard. We do not anticipate any further planned downtime over the summer.

Blackboard course roll-over 2015 complete

The Blackboard course roll-over is now complete.  You will see a new Blackboard course for every SITS unit that is running next year – these are in the format HISP21309_2015

You will find it much easier to distinguish between courses for different academic years by using these instructions “Group your courses by year: learn how to simplify your My Courses in 18 seconds.”

All new courses are created as “Unavailable” so students will not be able to see them yet.  When you wish to switch them on simply look for the course availability on the “Qwickly” module on the home page of Blackboard and switch the course to “On”.

Also this year you will see an additional hidden menu item at the bottom of your menu called “Reading List”.  From this menu you will be able to upload your reading list for library staff to access it and when the reading list has been uploaded it will appear on the page for students to see.  See this message from the library

“A reminder that the University is undertaking an early implementation of a reading list management policy, as reading lists are currently provided to students and library staff in a variety of ways leading to inconsistent student experience. The early implementation uses Blackboard to help provide reading lists  in a uniform manner. More information can be found using the ereserves/reading list tab in Blackboard.”

All staff will have been added to the new versions of courses that they were attached to last year.  Students are being added as they are enrolled on SITS.

We also provide “Hub” courses for areas where more than one Unit code of students are being taught together – we are in the process of copying last years Hub courses and these should be available early next week.

Blackboard upgrade – summer 2014

The 2014 Blackboard upgrade will take place between Tuesday 22nd July and Friday 25th July. A temporary read-only replacement service will be available during this time. Please do not edit courses after Sunday 20th July until the upgrade is complete. Edits made during this time will not be saved. The last date to request external accounts before the upgrade is Friday 18th July, by 4pm.

The familiar interface remains in the new version (which is known as SP14), but there are improvements in the student and staff experience, particularly in relation to online submission and marking.

Once again, the content of this year’s unit courses will be copied into 2014-15 versions from 1st August. This means that you may see 2013 as well as 2014 courses on Blackboard. Historic and current versions are clearly identified by a year suffix.

Further information and short videos on some of the new features can be found on the Blackboard Upgrade website.

If you have any questions please contact tel-help@bristol.ac.uk

Blackboard and QMP upgrades and other TEL developments

There are a number of technology enhanced learning (TEL) developments happening this year, including upgrades of both Blackboard and Questionmark during the summer.

The Blackboard upgrade will take place between Tuesday 22nd July and Friday 25th July. Questionmark will be upgraded during the week beginning Monday 11th August.

Further information is on the TEL website.

“Archiving” of 2012-13 courses

Now that the resits period is over, we are preparing to undertake the final stage of the Blackboard course roll-over process. This will involve making all SITS-linked 2012-13 courses unavailable to both staff and students – though the courses will remain on our servers, and can be accessed if necessary. To request access to previous years’ courses, please fill out this form and send it to tel-help@bristol.ac.uk (if you have already made such a request, you do not need to resubmit it). We will be making the 2012-13 courses unavailable on the morning of Thursday 19th of September, and then re-enabling any courses for which access has been requested after that.

Blackboard 2013 upgrade complete

The main part of the 2013 summer upgrade to Blackboard version SP11 has been completed successfully.  We hope you find the new look an improvement.

Part of the upgrade has been to provide copies of SITS unit courses.  This means that you may see 2012-13 courses as well as 2013 versions of these unit courses in the “My Courses” box on your Blackboard home page.   Historic and current versions are clearly identified by a year suffix in the course name, and you can organise these so 2012-13 and 2013 SITS units show separately by using “Terms”. Instructions on how to do this are at: http://blackboard.blogs.ilrt.org/?p=1276

The temporary replacement service used during the upgrade is no longer available to users. If you need to access data from this please contact tel-help@bristol.ac.uk

Further information about the upgrade is on the TEL website: http://www.bristol.ac.uk/esu/e-learning/projects/bbupgrade2013/

If you have any questions or would like to book a Blackboard roadshow please email tel-help@bristol.ac.uk

Blackboard Upgrade Summer 2013

The summer 2013 upgrade is currently still running. We are just making final changes to the new courses for the coming academic year. Our current plan is to have the full version of Blackboard online by 2pm.

Apologies for any inconvenience this may be causing you. If you have any questions please email TEL-help@bristol.ac.uk

Blackboard upgrade – Retention centre for monitoring course activity and participation

As part of this summer’s upgrade, Blackboard will have a new feature called the “Retention Centre”. This allows Instructors to monitor activity and participation in courses, including marks, missed deadlines, course access, and other criteria which staff can set themselves.  It can be accessed within each course Control Panel and also from the new “Global Navigation Menu“.

4  minute video tutorial on the Retention Centre is available.

To find out more about this or any of the other Blackboard enhancements this summer:

This summer’s upgrade will take place between Tuesday 30th July (starting at 9am ) and Monday 5th August (midday). A temporary replacement service will be available during this time.
